Nine-goal Fylde can still improve, says manager

The Coasters remain top of the National League North table by four points following the record-breaking 9-2 home win over Boston United last weekend.

However, Challinor believes there is more to come from the Coasters as they look to tighten up at the back.

Challinor said: “Games at Mill Farm have averaged around five goals each, so they have been very entertaining – which isn’t always great for me personally!

“We are still conceding sloppy goals, so there is plenty to work on.

“But that is a good thing in my eyes because it will keep the lads grounded.

£If we had won the game against Boston 9-0, then people might have thought we had cracked it, but we are still showing areas in which we can improve.

“That is a positive for me because it keeps everyone working hard.”

The result against Boston was a new league record for highest-scoring game and Challinor believes the scoreline could have been even more comprehensive.

“It’s a very rare scoreline but we fully merited it,” he added.

“We scored nine but in all honesty we could have had 15.

“I always look at the stats after games and we had 18 corners and 35 shots on goal, so we really tested them and got our just deserts for some fantastic play.

“You have to be ruthless because if it were the other way around you feel every other team would take advantage.”

The Coasters switch their attention to the FA Trophy this Saturday with a trip to league rivals Gloucester City and Challinor is looking for the same mentality from his troops.

The Coasters boss said: “We have started the season really well but we still haven’t managed to pull away from the rest of the league.

“That said, if someone had offered us top of the league with just one defeat at this stage, then we would have snapped their hand off.

“Other teams around us are doing very well too and there is still a long way to go. We are showing the right signs, and even when we aren’t playing particularly well we are still picking up points.

“The FA Trophy game probably comes at a good time for us.

“After a result like last weekend’s, you can sometimes think you’ve cracked it, but you need to have the same attitude in every single game.

“There can be some surprise results if you aren’t right at it and we have to be good enough to switch between competitions over the next few weeks.

“The FA Trophy is an important competition for us but we won’t let it get in the way of our progress in the league.

“We will go to Gloucester looking to put on the same performance with the same principles as we did at the weekend.”
