AN interesting piece of wartime memorabilia goes under the hammer at a St Annes auction room today.
Gerrards is selling a signed letter from US General Dwight D Eisenhower that was sent to the Fylde.

The family-run action house on St Georges Road has put a value of between £100-£200 on the item.

The typed letter – from “Headquarters European Theater, United States Army” dated March 4, 1944 – is addressed to a Mr Fielding Late of St Annes, Blackpool, Lancs.

It reads: “Dear Mr Fielding. Thank you for your letter and interest in an Allied victory. Also, for your congratulations to me and all my command, It was indeed kind of you to write and I am truly appreciative. Sincerely.”

It is signed in black ink “Dwight D Eisenhower”.

The letter goes will be auctioned together with the original envelope, with a typed incorrect address and a subsequent letter from the homeowner to General Eisenhower.

The homeowner explains that the letter had been delivered to his home.

On the envelope the Post Office has written “Try 1 Cecil Street” and asks the general for permission to keep it as a souvenir.

John Gerrard, owner of the auction house, said: “It came in off the street. A lady said it had been in her family all her life.”

He added: “It will probably sell through the Internet, maybe back to America for its autograph value. We put everything on the internet with pictures and descriptions.”
