THE Queen welcomed thousands of guests to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
And among those singled out to meet Her Majesty were the Appleton family.

Jeanette Appleton, 47, who runs the Our Lady Star of the Sea Youth Theatre in St Annes, said she was "stunned" by the occasion.

The sun shone as some 8,000 people enjoyed tea and cakes in the grounds of the royal residence.

The guests dressed up in their finest clothes, including a vast array of hats on show among the women, to attend the event – which is the second of three garden parties being held at Buckingham Palace this summer.

The Queen was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal, the Duke of Kent, the Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy.
