RESIDENTS were today celebrating after a massive housing scheme – dubbed the New Fylde Village–was thrown out by the Government.
Secretary of State Eric Pickles has stepped in to reject the plans by Kensington Developments to build 1,150 homes on land between Blackpool and St Annes.

If it had gone ahead, the new estate would have transformed 160 acres of land stretching from Queensway to Cypress Point.

The decision has delighted opponents of the scheme who had claimed it would lead to destruction of wildlife and possbile flooding.

Following a 10-day public inquiry last December, planning inspector Phil Grainger had recommended the development go ahead largely because it would help pay for the delivery of a new road link to the M55 motorway.

But Mr Pickles ruled that was not a strong enough reason because "there can be no certainty that planning permission will be forthcoming to enable it to be built".
