Joseph toasts a century
FAMILY travelled from all over the country to celebrate the 100th birthday of great-great grandfather Joseph Charlesworth at the Parkwater Hotel.
Joseph, who celebrates his birthday today, was born in Prestwich the same year that Baden-Powell set up scouting the movement, Internazionale Football Club was founded in Milan and Vimto hit the shelves for the first time.
After attending Manchester Grammar School, Joseph qualified as a chartered accountant for Pilkington and Co on King Street in Manchester. He took over the firm in the early 1950s, and ran both the Manchester and St Annes offices for the company until his retirement in 1992.
He was a fire warden in Manchester City Centre during Word War Two and in 1949 he and his wife Hilda moved the family to St Annes. They had four children together, who were all known by the nicknames which Joseph gave to them; Audrey (Doog), David (Rapture) and twins John (Hulk) and Peter (Butter).
He attended St Annes Congregational Church and served as both Deacon and Assistant Treasurer to the Church during the late 60s and early 70s. He was also the PTA secretary at King Edward VII School.
He and Hilda, who has recently celebrated her 95th Birthday, have been married for 72 years. They have 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
His son Peter said: "It was a smashing do and about 70 people turned up in the end. He said it was the best day of his life."
