CAMPAIGNERS kept up the pressure by protesting on the day that St Annes Swimming Baths shut its doors for the final time.
The facility is now closed indefinitely after Fylde Council chiefs voted to axe the pool as part of cost-cutting measures to plug a £1 million budget deficit.
But around 80 campaigners turned up to voice their disapproval at the closure and were jo
ined by film crews from Granada and the BBC.
Campaigner Eric Pass, 63, of Devere Gardens, St Annes, has used the baths on a daily basis for the past two decades.
Eric said: "This is such a wonderful amenity we have. I'm so angry at the Council for closing it and there are so many reasons it should not be closed.
"We must now work as hard as we can to get it re-opened."
The pool now faces an uncertain future but Fylde Council says it is continuing to explore a number of options to keep swimming in the borough.
One of these involves Fylde Coast YMCA providing a new pool facility on the site whilst another is to mothball the pool for the immediate future with the scope to reopen the facility sometime in the future.
Barbara Mackenzie, Leader of St Annes Town Council, believes that one offer in particular looks too good to turn down.
"There is a proposal that has been put to Fylde Borough Council at not too large a cost to them or to the people of St Annes so we are waiting to hear what their response is."
She added: "Fylde Borough have never been included us in anything but as a town council we are responsible for the people of St Annes."
A Fylde Council Spokesperson said it had no further comment to make on the issue.
