THE sand dunes at St Annes seafront have once again been scorched by fire.
A blaze broke out on Tuesday, at about 10.45am, causing more than 100sq m of damage near the nature reserve, on Clifton Drive North.

It was the latest in a series of fires which have ripped through the grass and devastated plants and wildlife.

Arsonists were blamed for a spate of incidents last month and resulted in many lizards, which made their home on the dunes, being killed.

Fire officers say the dry conditions and higher temperatures yesterday meant the flames were able to spread quickly, threatening the engulf the natural habitat.

Three crews – from St Annes, South Shore and Lytham – had to be called out and police had to shut the busy road to allow access to a fire hydrant across the road, at an apartment block near the New Thursby Residential Home.
