A host of famous names have signed a petition calling for a moratorium on shale gas extraction.
More than 150 celebrities, scientists and campaign groups have endorsed calls for a re-think of the Government’s shale gas strategy under the banner “we need to talk about fracking”.
Famous names include Sir Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Helena Bonham-Carter, Alan Carr, Jude Law, Russell Brand and Tracey Emin.
The petition said: “There is substantial evidence showing that fracking causes water stress and risks water contamination and soil contamination, earth tremors and a threat to human, wildlife, bird, fish and livestock health.”
Gas companies, including Cuadrilla, have argued the process, which involves firing a mixture of chemicals and water underground to crack shale rock, is safe.
