A walking football league looks set to take strides into Fylde.
Age UK Lancashire has teamed up with Sainsbury’s St Annes store in a bid to establish a competition to increase activity levels among the over-50s – and is looking for people in that age group to get involved.
Proving increasingly popular in various parts of the country, including nearby Blackpool, walking football sees the game played at a more sedate pace, making it an ideal activity for people who have sustained an injury or simply want to enjoy football without the vigorous workout.
It is hoped that the partnership between Age UK in the county and Sainsbury’s will allow for the establishment of a walking football competition, with the store offering to hold fund-raising events such as bag packs and raffles over the next 12 months to fund the initiative.
Sainsbury’s spokesman Jackson Mills said: “I’m so excited we are going to be in partnership with Age UK Lancashire over the next 12 months bringing walking football alive in the local community.
“This is a local initiative and we want anyone over the age of 50 to get involved. We’re hoping to have our first groups set up by September and are currently finalising a venue.”
Age UK Lancashire services co-ordinator Emma Whitty-Haddock added: “These walking football groups will enable us to reach those people who currently do not utilise our services especially older men. It will give local older people the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and improve their health and wellbeing. We are delighted that the St Annes Sainsburys store is partnering with us to make this a possibility but we now need people to join a team.”
