PERHAPS best known as the birth-place of Mozart, Salzburg, the city that provided the setting for The Sound of Music, is a year-round tourist favourite.
Most of Salzburg’s tourist attractions are in Altstadt, the Old Town, with its Baroque architecture, quaint squares, fountains and rustic medieval buildings.

Tourists can get the cable-car up to the 1,660ft high medieval fortress of Hohensalzburg overlooking the city, and then wander down into the centre itself and visit Mozart’s birthplace and former residence.

No visit to Salzburg is complete without a visit to the baroque Salzburg Cathedral, and a stroll around the charming streets, churches and squares – stopping for kaffee und kuchen (coffee and cake) in one of Salzburg’s many cafés and restaurants.
