It was Lady Eleanor, Clifton's Aunty Anne, who gave our town its name. And the parish church of St Anne was built with Clifton family money.
But it was Canon James Taylor, a Warton man, who persuaded the Duke of Norfolk to build the Catholic Church on the condition that the late Colonel Clifton and Flora were commemorated therein.
So we owe two churches and so much more to the Clifton
family. In a real way these churches belong to our town. So leading up to Christmas, both are trying to involve the community more. The parish church with its festival of Christmas trees, the Catholic Church with an open weekend from 14th -16th December. So come and see!
The open weekend will be marked on Friday evening by our award-winning Youth theatre presenting Scrooge in Our Lady's Parish Centre.
Saturday and Sunday the church will be open. Welcomers will show you round, answer questions; exhibitions made by our parishioners and schoolchildren, will give a glimpse of history, and all the activities which go on. There will be services at the usual times, sweet singing in the choir, coffee and cakes for all who want them.
So come and see!Enjoy our heritage, and say a quiet prayer for our lovely town.
