Tom Gregory, 20, represented by Media City based Scream Management, which started in Blackpool in 1998, is also due to appear in The Five series next month as well as major brand commercials.

Tom’s potential was spotted when he auditioned at a workshop held by Scream Management Actors Agency.

The A Word, written by BAFTA award winner Peter Bowker, represents his biggest break, casting Tom alongside Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, Safe House), Greg McHugh (Fresh Meat) and Lee Ingleby (Harry Potter). The funny yet provoking series, set in Lakeland, tells how the Hughes family life changes when youngest son Joe, five, is diagnosed with autism - on the mild side of the spectrum according to writer Bowker. Eccleston plays Joe’s grandfather.

It focuses on what life is like to have a loved one with autism. The programme has already won acclaim for its sensitive portrayal of the issues and is likely to heighten awareness of autism.

Former Rossall School pupil Tom has a pivotal role as boyfriend to Joe’s sister Rebecca, played by Molly Wright, 19, who’s also from the Fylde.

Tom adds: “I knew very little about autism and the different types but this series shows it in a very light and warm hearted way. The essence of the programme is that autism doesn’t have to be taken in a serious way.

“With love, care and attention you’re still able to overcome any boundaries. I hope everyone receives it well as it’s a great little piece. Scream have been absolutely fantastic. They all work so hard - 50 per cent of your career is based on how good your agent is so I am eternally grateful.”

Jessica Bell, agent at Scream Management, daughter of Scream founder/MD Tracey Bell, says: “We’re absolutely delighted for Tom to be part of such a fantastic series. We’re very proud of him for all of his achievements so far.”

His burgeoning acting career has seen Tom turn his back, reluctantly, on band mates in Golden Wings, which released an EP this time last year.

You can catch The A Word next on Tuesday, 9pm, BBC 1.
