The sun has come out on this fun-filled production

If you’re stuck in a day that’s grey and lonely, Lytham Amateur Operatic Society’s production of ‘Annie’ will definitely clear away the cobwebs and the sorrow, ’til there’s none.

In the title role, Alice Irving is a natural and her rendition of ‘Tomorrow’ is truly wonderful. Her orphan pals had star quality in abundance, with every note sung from the heart. A special mention must go to Lydia Bell (playing Tessie in this performance but will play Annie for two performances also) who was well-animated throughout.

Bernard Kennedy gives a suitably authoritarian, yet affectionate performance as Oliver Warbucks, building a very believable relationship with the spirited Annie. Rebecca Duckworth is to be congratulated on a fine performance as Grace Farrell – her vocals were outstanding.

Claire Gaskell gives her all as Miss Hannigan, excellent comic delivery and never out of character. Steve and Charlii Deveney work well together as Rooster and Lily St Regis, their number ‘Easy Street’ is one of the highlights of the show.

The principal cast are well-supported by the chorus, each member with their own unique character. Not forgetting the adorable pup Barney as Annie’s dog Sandy, who is so well-behaved throughout and steals the show every single time he walks onstage.

The odd first night glitch aside, the superb costumes, effective lighting and Peter Buckley’s fantastic orchestra all contribute to a very enjoyable production. The show runs through to Saturday.
