Blackpool FC attacks carbon zero goal for Bloomfield Road

The club has set a target to head towards a net zero carbon emissions goal.

The Bloomfield Road side has called upon energy specialists Utility Team, who are the club’s shirt sponsors to carry out a review of energy usage and come up with a plan to reduce its carbon footprint and save money.

Utility Team working with its partner organisation Clearworld visited Bloomfield Road to do an energy audit and then devised a plan to reduce its energy spend, develop a robust energy reduction strategy, future proof their stadium and help them become a net zero sports organisation.

It suggested the installation of new LED lights to cut energy consumption and maintenance costs; the installation of new lighting controls across the stadium to minimise the lighting of areas not being used.

It also suggested upgrading the heating, ventilation and air conditioning building management system controls to optimise performance and integrating all HVAC systems with the building management system to give the club greater control and visibility of energy consumption.

It said the measures could give a 29 per cent cut in electricity usage, a 18 per cent reduction in gas usage and an energy saving of over £113,000 a year plus cutting carbon emissions by 276 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Glynn Makin, stadium operations and site manager at Blackpool FC ,said “Since coming on board, Utility Team, have delivered a proactive approach in terms of energy reduction and sustainability initiatives with their partnerships Clearworld.

“They have provided energy saving, LED lighting and water saving proposals to the club’s management team.

“The proposals included a full breakdown of the projects and costs, outlining the return on investments, which enables the club’s management and ultimately the owner to make informed decisions.

“These initiatives are high on the agenda as we look to make Blackpool Football Club as energy efficient as possible.

“We believe that, ultimately, these initiatives will save energy and money, but also transform the club into a net zero and sustainable business.”
