Malaysian link-up for BAE Systems

Aircraft makers on the Fylde have played host to visitors from Malaysia in a bid to develop links between the country and the UK.

Bosses from four Malaysian firms visited BAE Systems’ sites in Warton and Samlesbury, Lancashire, on Monday and got a first-hand look at its world-class aerospace manufacturing facility and flight test centre for military aircraft.

They also visited Kilgour Aerospace in Blackpool which has been involved in the aerospace industry since 1966, as part of a two-day visit organised by BAE Systems and the SME Corporation Malaysia.

Malaysia is poised to buy around 24 new generation fighters and BAE is hoping to win the lucrative contract.

Mark Kane, BAE Systems Managing Director – Combat Air, said the visit would build on the success of an exhibition attended by many UK companies in Malaysia earlier this year.

He said: “This visit will ensure that those SMEs already on the journey with us will continue to develop mutually beneficial relationships.

“Malaysia is a capable, prosperous and flexible market in which to operate and the Malaysian government has outlined support and financial incentives for inward foreign investment.”

Dr Datuk Ir Mohamed Al Amin Bin Haji Abdul Majid, Chairman of the SME Corporation Malaysia, a government body set up to link Malaysian small businesses with counterparts across the world, said the visit would help “broaden the vision” of companies.

He said: “The familiarisation tour to BAE Systems and others in UK helped our small-and-medium-sized businesses gain greater understanding of their business and instilled confidence in their ability to partner with small and medium-sized companies across the world, even from sophisticated, high end technology aerospace.”

On Tuesday, representatives of Malaysian firms Innopeak (M) Pvt. Ltd., Seri Aero Jaya Pvt. Ltd., TWI Services Pvt. Ltd, Upeca Technologies Pvt. Ltd, visited the North West Aerospace Alliance (NWAA), a body set up to support businesses in the industry supply chain.

BAE Systems has had a presence in Malaysia for more than 20 years .nd established South East Asia regional headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
