Mersey beat joy for resort training firm

Whitehills-based Colossal Training has teamed up with the new Port Academy Liverpool to offer a range of courses at a purpose built, dedicated training centre as the Mersey city launches a bid to revitalise its maritime status.

Colossal’s range of training courses include; medical, health and safety, security, fire safety, education and hospitality.

But it is best known for its maritime expertise drawing on the experience of its staff and instructors many of whom have backgrounds in the Royal Marines.

It is the only company in the UK that runs the maritime STCW Basic Training course, which is required by anyone going to sea, every week of the year.

Chief operating officer at Colossal Group Ron Bell said they were delighted with the deal for its training arm which meant the company would be taking on new staff.

He said: “Port Academy Liverpool will provide training for students of all ages who are looking to follow a career in any of the many areas of the maritime sector.

“It is often overlooked that maritime is the largest industry in the world and, as an industry, is worth around £12bn per year to the UK economy.

“Colossal has been selected as the academy’s official partner and will deliver all short courses within the facility.

“The Academy is situated close to the Port of Liverpool’s world famous docks in Bootle and is one of a few educational establishments designed specifically for the maritime sector.”

The company, founded in 2011 by former Royal Marine Lee Kirton has a staff of six at its head office and a bank of around 20 instructors. It also provides anti-piracy and close protection training.
