Blackpool academy proves a class act in more ways than one

School may be out for now, but youngsters at one Blackpool school have double reason to celebrate when they get back to class.

Pupils at Montgomery Academy proved a real class act when they made it into the top 10 of a national learning programme's leader board and wee ranked in the top five per cent for another .

During the recent lockdown among lots of paper exercises and activities sent home the high school staff set tasks online for students to complete.

The science, humanities, English and media studies teams used a programme called Seneca learning which is the UK.’s most popular revision app with more than 2.5 million users in England alone.

Montgomery made it into the top 10 on the leader board for the number of tasks completed , ranked ninth out of 501 schools.

Media studies teacher Joan Farnworth said: "Seneca is a great tool for online learning. It’s accessible for the students and very easy for teachers and parents to see how they are getting on.

It’s been fantastic during lockdown as students were able to continue to work towards their GCSE subjects from home."

Maths students also excelled. Using the Hegarty Maths programme Montgomery pupils answered 841,684 questions which equates to 14,766 learning hours - putting the resort school in the top five per cent at 73rd out of 1,750 schools .

Alex Diver, maths tutor at the school said, "We are extremely pleased with the outstanding remote learning efforts of our students .

"They have shown resilience and determination during the current situation to continue their mathematical development. Hegarty Maths alongside montgomerymaths.co.uk has enabled our students to receive video support."

Senior deputy headteacher Clare Montgomery added: "We have really missed having our students in school, but it is great to see that they have been working so hard from home.

"The pandemic has certainly given us some challenges, but team Montgomery has certainly risen to it."
