GCSE results come out on August 24 and for many the news will simply confirm their plans for the next step after school.

However, others will get a surprise on results day, for good or for bad, opening up a new range of choices to be made.

Blackpool Sixth College, with its bright, modern one-site campus, has recently been rated Outstanding by Ofsted, and prides itself on having a wide curriculum. Almost every student goes on to a positive outcome after two years – a good job, apprenticeship, degree apprenticeship or university life, including Oxford and Cambridge.

New for 2023 is a T Level in Digital – perfect for those pursuing a vocational career in this growth sector. Also new is an accountancy course, alongside traditional courses such as sciences, drama, English, and languages. Some further popular options include criminology, film and TV, fashion and dance.

Alongside all the course work, Blackpool Sixth, which offers excellent pastoral care, has an enrichment programme of extra options, including sport, music, environmental action and volunteering.

Jon McLeod, head of admissions at Blackpool Sixth Form College said: “Many of our new intake in September will have been planning to come to Blackpool Sixth all along and will have researched exactly what they want to do. We pride ourselves on building futures, and that means providing a student life that’s not just about the classroom, but the whole experience.

“Some people will have better than expected results, and find themselves able to considering routes they had not thought of before. For others, their exam results may be disappointing, but our caring support team are there to help talk through options and ensure we find something suitable for every student.”

A team of advisers will be available post exam results, with key enrolment days on August 24 and 25.

“Our main message to anyone with unexpected results is not to panic,” added Mr McLeod. “We are there to support students and their parents and help them find a positive way forward. Whether a student knows exactly where they want to go, and has their courses planned out, or another who wants to grow and discover themselves while here, we have the flexibility built in to deliver for them.”

Top tips on results day

  • Stay calm … speak to your child and reassure them there are always good options
  • Speak to the advisors … they are there to help and have all the information you could need on course availability.
  • Be flexible … students may not yet have discovered where their strengths or interest lie, and that’s one of the big advantages of finding yourself at a sixth form college.
  • Be open to ideas … even if you don’t know what you want to do, listen to the advisors when they suggest courses. They may well come up with a dream future you have never imagine.

The Blackpool Sixth campus also has excellent public transport links across the Fylde Coast, with subsidised travel available. More information is available on the college website.

If students have not yet applied to Blackpool Sixth but would like to join the college, they should contact the admissions team at [email protected] or visit the enrolment days on August 24 and 25. The enrolment hotline, offering advice and support will also be open, call 01253 394911.
