Celebrating stars of Fylde’s schools

Following in the footsteps of the glittering stars of Strictly, the Fylde coast’s schoolchildren lit up the Blackpool Tower Ballroom at The Gazette’s Education Awards last night.

The world famous venue played host to a sparkling ceremony to celebrate the achievements of children, teachers, staff and schools in making the Fylde a great place to learn.

Hundreds of children from the area’s schools filled the ballroom for the ceremony, led by Radio Wave presenters Ged Mills and Hayley Kay.

The Education Awards, sponsored by BAE Systems and Blackpool and The Fylde College, celebrate education across Blackpool and the Fylde coast, ensuring those who make a difference through learning, sport, arts and pastoral care are given recognition in the community.

Jon Rhodes, editor of The Gazette, said: “The aim of these awards is to pay tribute to hardworking pupils, inspirational teachers and the many unsung heroes who are striving to raise education standards and achievements across all age groups and give Fylde’s young people the best possible start in life.”

Pilling St John’s Primary School was named Primary School of the Year at the ceremony, after judges commended its work in music, science , archaeology, sustainability and Fair Trade.

And Secondary School of the Year went to Hodgson Academy, Poulton, which was hailed for its record breaking GCSE grades.

Entertainment was provided by degree students, Horizon Dance Society, from Blackpool and The Fylde College’s School of Creative Arts, doing their version of Thriller.

And the college’s further education students performed Over the Rainbow from their Christmas production, Wizard of Oz.
