Westmorland Homecare, which operates throughout the county, has an army of carers visiting clients – and for many people who are shielding and isolating, they can be the only faces they see each week.

Russell Crossley, director of Westmorland, said: “We have been so impressed by how everyone has responded to the pandemic; our own team, local businesses that are supporting us, and the wider community.

“Our healthcare assistants are constantly going above and beyond to protect and help our vulnerable clients. They really are a lifeline for the community. Sometimes we are the only people they see, and even while we are in their property, we have to remain as socially distant as possible. Something as small as a smile and chat goes a long way.”

For example, one of the companies HCA’s, Amanda Sutton, bought every one of her own clients flowers and chocolates, just as a pick-me-up treat. She said the smiles on their faces really made it all worthwhile.

And local High Street names have been helping Westmorland Homecare deliver smiles galore, boosting the morale of both the team and the clients.

Russell added: “Many of our clients didn’t get to celebrate Easter in the usual way this year, missing out on family visits or celebrating with their church community. Booths in Poulton-le-Fylde donated Easter eggs for all of our clients and our staff, and Morrisons donated diabetic friendly treats. How amazing is it that we have such a fantastic community”

“This made a big difference for our isolated, vulnerable clients, not forgetting to mention, our staff too – some of them missed out on seeing their only family, as they were busy supporting clients.”

All of the Westmorland team are equipped with appropriate equipment, including standard protection gear and sanitisers. But thanks to 3D Horizon at Preesall and Preston’s Kirkham Grammar School design and technology department, they’ve got proper visors too.

“These wonderful people have created visors for our healthcare assistants free of charge, and we really appreciate that support. It helps keep everyone safe.”

Westmorland put a shout out on social media to ask for a postcard campaign to deliver cheery notes to clients who are struggling during the pandemic, and the results have been phenomenal.

“The people of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have been so lovely! We asked for positive messages to send to our clients, and some of the feedback has been amazing. We have received so many beautiful paintings from the local community”

The team at Westmorland Homecare want everyone to feel reassured. “We are still working; our office is still open. If anyone needs any support, please feel free to call us. We can still provide consultations and we can still provide care for your loved ones. We are here for you before, during and after Covid-19.”
