It was the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and also storms which battered the Fylde Coast
A magician drove along the promenade blindfolded to prove he knew the route so well (!!) and race horse Red Rumand jockey was in town to switch on the Illuminations. These and plenty other fantastic pictures wrap up Blackpool in 1977.
Red Rum left his mark on Blackpool's newest and most spectacular Pleasure Beach ride. Thousands of people crowded around the "Steeplechase" as Rummy inspected the 500 yard long course. Pleasure Beach officials had hoped that the horse would leave his hoof print in a concrete slab as a memento of his visit - but the noise from nearby rides scared the horse and the ceremoney was abandoned Photo: National World
A time capsule illustrating life in 1977 was buried beneath the foundation stone of Coral Island. More than 1,000 Blackpool residents entered a contest to decide the 20 items packed into the capsule. The Mayor of Blackpool, Coun Cyril Nuttall, is pictured laying the foundation stone along with other dignitaries. Wonder what was in it? Photo: National World
