The Ashes are almost upon us.
And so, with England and Australia set to do battle once again in pursuit of the famous little urn, we take a look back at a few famous Lancastrian faces who have partaken in one of sport’s greatest rivalries over the years…
Johnny Briggs: The second-highest wicket-taker in Lancashire's history after Brian Statham, Johnny Briggs also took 117 wickets at an average of 17.75 for England in the 1880s and 1890s. Photo: Other
Johnny Tyldesley: The man who scored 86 centuries and 37,897 runs in 608 matches for Lancashire, Johnny Tyldesley also played 31 Tests for England. Photo: Other
Paul Allott: The man who took 8 for 48 on the day which was supposed to be all about Michael Holding's debut for Lancashire, Allott is Lancashire through and through. Having taken over 600 wickets for the county during an illustrious career, he also went on to become the club's Director of Cricket in 2017, a role he held until 2021. Photo: PA Photos
Brian Statham: You don't get an end named after you at Old Trafford Cricket Ground without taking a few wickets, and nobody took more wearing the Red Rose than Statham. He took a mind-blowing 2,260 scalps in 559 matches for Lancashire at an average of 16.37. Words can't do justice to the man. Photo: PA
Dominic Cork: Perhaps more famed for his time with Derbyshire, Cork was nevertheless a stalwart performer for Lancashire during his time at Old Trafford and took 131 wickets for England in Test matches at an average of 29.81. Photo: David Davies
Syd Barnes: The man behind the record-breaking bowling average of 16.43 for his 189 scalps, Barnes - who played four seasons for Lancashire at the turn of the 20th century - is a by-word when it comes to cricketing brilliance. Photo: Other
