Members of the 1st Broughton troop of beavers and cubs joined councillors Audrey Scott, Liz Clarkson and Jack Heatley in a bid to get rid of litter in the Sharoe Green area of Preston. They started their drive, armed with brushes and pans, near Booth's supermarket in Sharoe Green Lane

Four gypsy couples tied the knot in a ceremony in Preston which lasted nearly an hour. The ceremony at St Walburges Church, was thought to be the first of its kind ever to be held in the town. Michael McCann and Kathleen Delaney; James Gavin and Margaret McCann; Frances Gavin and Barbara McCann; and Daniel McCann and Eileen Gavin were all married in the ceremony

A new 750,000 general purpose hall at an independent Lancashire school was officially opened by the Earl of Derby. The hall, at Kirkham Grammar School, ends decades of cramped school assemblies. Pictured above are Lord Derby; chairman of the governors Peter Hosker; and headmaster Malcolm Summerlee
