THE great golf countdown to the Open championships at Royal Lytham next summer has already started.
So here’s a timely nostalgic look at fashion on the fairways 60 years ago, which would put today’s style icons Ian Poulter and Paula Creamer to shame.
Certainly the ladies were in the swing, looking at the 1950s-style of headscarf and short socks sported by Mrs J C Daniels at Old Links GC, while a beret suits Mrs Soulby on the putting green at Royal Lytham – as well as an unnamed spectator on her tripod seat.
Flat caps were certainly to the fore for the gents, as shown by Dixie Rawlinson in action at Old Links, while well-known Fairhaven GC Freddie Hawksworth looks dapper in his tartan titfer as he plays in the 1954 Ashton Trophy.
Finally, Royal Lytham professional Ted Musty crouches to teach a motley crew of oddly-dressed schoolgirls in 1953.
