Developers have today revealed plans for a £12m apartment block on Blackpool Promenade which they hope to start building as soon as possible.
Work is already under way to clear the site and a planning application has now been officially lodged with Blackpool Council for the scheme on the site of a derelict nursing home.
If it gets the go-ahead, 113 apartments will be built on the corner of Harrow Place and South Promenade which is currently occupied by the former Abbeydale Care Home.
A consortium made up of hotelier Tony Banks and businessmen Ron and Dave Richardson is behind the ambitious proposal for a five-to-eight storey building with one, two and three-bedroomed apartments.
Mr Banks said; “The development has taken over 12 months to reach the planning application stage, these 12 months have been difficult to say the least.
“The buildings were in a dire and dangerous condition when we purchased them, with every bed, carpets and stick of furniture from the hotels and care homes still in situ.

“The structures themselves were so dangerous we have needed to carry out exhaustive amounts of work to just make them safe.
“Water ingress and vandalism have been a major issue over the years these buildings have stood empty.
“Numerous designs were considered until this final plan was agreed by all concerned. The scheme will take approximately two years to complete but will result in a spectacular addition to South Promenade.”
The design includes a ‘Celebration Corner’ with roof terraces and glass balconies.
If planning permission is granted, construction will create around 100 jobs.
Mr Banks, whose portfolio of Blackpool hotels includes The Royal Carlton, The Royal Seabank, The Boston and Southbank, added: “As a consortium we are all committed to Blackpool and its future.
“We are already employing 14 full time local staff involved in the clearing and preparation of the site.
“Many developments have been considered for different parts of the Promenade over the past few years but none have ever actually been built.
“This is different, once planning is granted then work will start in haste to transform the blot of the landscape which currently occupies the site to a stunning range of apartments.”
The plans have been drawn up by Caunce Street-based Joseph Boniface Architects Ltd.
Mr Boniface said: “We are fortunate enough to be involved with this incredibly exciting and prestigious scheme on the Promenade and have worked closely with our clients and the planning department in producing a truly landmark building.
“Our practice was appointed to design a piece of architecture befitting of its location and aspirations of the client and the council which will act as a catalyst in the regeneration of New South Promenade.
“The proposals respond carefully to its setting on this prominent site and to the views of the Lake District and the Welsh mountains. The architecture has been informed by using rhythms of existing apertures within the crescent and elements of forms and materials.”
There is also a scheme in the pipeline for 99 flats on Wimbourne Place on South Promenade which would involve the demolition of the Kimberley, Waldorf and Henderson hotels.
It was recommended for approval at the council’s last planning committee but was put on hold because councillors said they needed more details about the proximity of the scheme to existing houses.
