An historic pub which was the subject of closure fears three years ago is to be refurbished – with 20 new jobs created in the process.
The Victoria Hotel, St Annes, was listed as a community asset under the Localism Act in a bid to ensure it continues as a pub after a bid to knock it down and replace it with retirement flats was blocked by planners.
Now parent group the Spirit Group has announced a £300,000 upgrade for the hostelry which currently employs seven people, headed by manager Jordan Sadler.
It is the oldest pub in St Annes, dating back to 1897 –and the refurbishment has been greeted with delight by campaigners.
“It’s wonderful news – just what we have been waiting for and hopefully a major step towards the Vic realising its full potential,” said Coun Ed Nash, St Annes mayor and a committee member of the Victoria Hotel Community Association, which was formed to fight the flats plans in 2012.
Scaffolding went up around the Church Road pub this week and it will close from February 2 to 17 for what Spirit say will be a complete makeover of the interior.
The bar will be completely revamped, with new signature pieces of furniture and contemporary fixtures and food will be reintroduced, including a specials menu.
Coun Nash added: “It’s a great pub and it will be especially good to see the kitchens open again.
“For a time the Association looked at possibly acquiring the pub but that is Spirit’s speciality and all credit to them for this investment.
“Perhaps in time we can work with them to get some of the upstairs rooms open for community use.”
Jordan Sadler said: “We’re hugely excited to be undergoing such a huge transformation.
“The Victoria Hotel is a big part of the community, so we’re pleased to be able to offer even better surroundings and a new menu alongside a wide selection of real ales and craft beers to our loyal and new guests alike.”
Jordan is also looking to recruit new team players for full and part-time positions, he said: “I am on the lookout for dynamic, hard-working individuals for the bar and kitchen who want to be part of the team here at the Victoria Hotel.”
