A warm winter's jacket (or two) for the orangutans

The biting chill of autumn has truly arrived this week, with temperatures plummeting to just four degrees centigrade yesterday.

But while we’re all wrapping up warm in woolly hats, scarves, and gloves, our primate pals at Blackpool Zoo have to rely on their keepers to stay warm.

Pictured here is 17-year-old Ramon, a critically-endangered Bornean Orangutan, who weighs 20 stone and demands something warmer than chopped raw vegetables to cope with such cold weather.

Instead, he’s been tucking into light meals of four toasty jacket potatoes and a jug of chamomile tea.

Ramon and his harem of three lady-loves are able to munch their way through 200 spuds and 32 cups of chamomile and peppermint tea every month during the winter.

Zoo keeper Charlotte Pennie said: “Everyone needs a little comfort food to give them a boost as the colder months draw in, and our orangutans aren’t any different. It certainly brightens up a cold and wintery Monday morning!”
