From there, he will aim for Lizard Point, Britain’s most southerly point thenLowestoft Ness, Britain’s most easterly point. Dunnet Head, near John O’Groats will be visited as the UK’s most northerly place before heading to Corrachadh Mor, which is the most westerly point.

His four-month unpaid adventure is to raise money for the RSPCA and animal-loving Alan said: “I’ll be blogging and posting videos on a regular basis at the ‘justgiving’ site so friends and family can see what’s been going on.

“It’s a major challenge for me. I hope to average about 40 miles per day on what will be a very heavily laden bike – I have four panniers carrying a tent, sleeping bag, changes of clothes and everything else I need for four months, excluding food.

“The most I have ever cycled in a day before is 40 miles, but riding 40 miles every day is something I’ve never done. I have done some training for the tour, but quite probably nowhere near enough. Hence the first couple of weeks on the road will be ‘training’ weeks!

“Forty miles a day may not sound a lot, but doing it every day on a fully loaded touring bike is going to be quite an effort.”

Alan, a sometime volunteer helper for the RSPCA has raised £180 so far and hopes staff, family and friends will push the total to £1,000.
