Baffling words for the '˜takin'

Ansdell and Fairhaven WI began its new 2018 season with our own '˜WI Fibbers' who entertained us all with Call my Bluff.

The evening began with a warm welcome to new members and this was followed by announcements and decision making as members voted on the new resolutions to be submitted to the WI Federation for consideration in the future.

Joint President Barbara Sanders-Wood, from Lytham, said: “I have been delighted to see my fellow president Susan Hodgson here this evening.

“Certain changes mean that I will be unable to attend our meetings as often, so I am delighted to hand over many of my responsibilities to Susan. With her skills and the continued support of our hard working committee, I know that together they will lead us to another exciting year in 2018.”

Member Pauline Mason thanked Barbara and said: “On behalf of us all I would like to express our appreciation for all that Babs has achieved for us.

“Along with the committee she has worked hard to develop Ansdell and Fairhaven WI into the vibrant and exciting group that it is today.

“We wish her well for the future and she can be assured of a warm welcome on the occasions when she is able to join us.”

Member and events organiser Julie Swift, from Lytham, then introduced the Call My Bluff team, comprising of herself and fellow members Jeanette Jones, Anne Butterworth and June Pollard.

These capable ladies showed great skill in baffling us with their all too plausible word definitions.

Julie was a wonderful compare for the evening, introducing each word and invariably mis-pronouncing it.

The ladies did a great job – we members didn’t have a clue which one of them was being truthful.

How were we to know that a ‘takin’ is the national animal of Bhutan!

Not many of us – but we’ll all remember it now.

The next meeting of the Ansdell and Fairhaven WI is on Monday, January 12 when Gail Newsham provides a fascinating account of the history of The Dick Kerr Ladies Football Team.

In addition members can immerse themselves in other WI activities including Book Club, Craft Club, Knit and Natter, Walking Group and organised outings to the theatre, cinema, restaurants and other venues.

Members and guests are welcome to join us at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Woodlands Road, Ansdell FY8 4EP from 7.30pm.
