Two of the UK’s top dance and music acts are to perform at this year’s Illuminations xwitch-on celebration, it has been revealed.

September’s show will be directed in part by Ashley Banjo, choreographer and leader of the Britain’s Got Talent-winning dance troupe group Diversity, while The Vamps, who rocked last year’s event party with a headline performance, will also perform.

Blackpool Council’s deputy leader, Coun Gillian Campbell, said: “Ashley Banjo is a proven performer on the world stage and we are thrilled that he will be putting his creative stamp on the switch-on event.

“He famously performed in Blackpool during the Royal Variety Performance and we look forward to welcoming him.

“The Vamps headlined one of our best-ever Switch-On events last year and we can’t wait to see them back in Blackpool.”

In his role as Creative Director, Ashley will be responsible for the curation of a special performance leading up to the Switch-On of the Illuminations.

That will include a bespoke set by Diversity, who begin a UK-wide arena tour early next year.

He said: “I can’t wait to take the creative lead in the Switch-On of the legendary Blackpool Illuminations,

““I’m collaborating with incredibly talented artists and performers on what will be an epic show and the perfect way to kick-off the UK’s first Slimefest weekend!”

The Friday night celebration will start with a ‘Blackpool Introduces’ showcase, featuring the best of talent from local venues including Verity Kinnon, James Edgar and Axi Wild, prior to the start of the main show.

The line-up will also include Blackpool’s own Stacey McClean, formerly of spin-off band S Club 8 and special sets by Club MTV.

More acts and details of the celebrity Switch-On star will be announced over the next few weeks.

As revealed earlier this year, Nickelodeon’s Slimefest will make its UK premiere, featuring live shows, activities, characters – and plenty of slime - during the celebration over September 3 and 4.
