Blackpool tattooist Danny has designs on stardom
A Blackpool tattooist has been announced as one of the stars of a brand new MTV show.
Danny Robinson, 24, will be one of six tattoo artists to feature in the upcoming series ‘Just Tattoo of Us’.
The show, which premieres on Monday, April 3, sees pairs of friends, families, couples and even some celebs put to the test by designing tattoos for each other. With a catch that the person being tattooed doesn’t get to see the final outcome until the big reveal, when it’s too late and imprinted on their body for life.
Danny owns the Tattoo Lounge on Park Road and has even designed and manufactured his own line of tattoo machines, which have been sold worldwide.
MTV approached Danny to be a part of the show after researching thousands of tattooists on social media, before they eventually settled on the final six, something that Danny admits is a massive honour to be part of.
He told The Gazette: “It’s so flattering.
“There’s a lot of people out there who are good tattooists and look the part, and to be picked it was just really good.
“It was more honouring because of how I started out in tattooing. I went about it the wrong way, I couldn’t get an apprenticeship, nobody would take me on.
“So to be asked to be on a show which is on in 63 countries – it’s mental.”
But what exactly is the ‘wrong way’ to get into tattooing?
Danny added: “I got tattooed when I was 14, so I was always around tattoos and I ended up buying a tattoo kit online and just practised on myself in my bedroom, and I had a couple of mates who would let me have a go.
“Then I started doing customers for money and got in trouble with licencing because I wasn’t registered. But I became very close with Jackie Harrison, who runs the licencing and she got me doing it legally and I became the first licenced mobile tattooist in Blackpool.”
Over the past few years, MTV shows have helped launch many careers and two of the biggest beneficiaries of that – Charlotte Crosby, from Geordie Shore and Stephen Bear, from Ex on the Beach, will present the new programme.
While Danny doesn’t have any dreams of presenting reality shows, he does hope that the show can act as a platform to help further his career.
He said: “Long term I’d like to create a brand for my studio and become like the Toni and Guy of tattooing.
“Once the show’s gone out, I’m going to look at Manchester for my next studio and just build from there.
“I’ve always been business minded so I know what it takes to create a good brand and good business and this show’s helped out massively.”
Just Tattoo Of Us premieres Monday, April 3, at 10pm, on MTV.
