The Friends of Lytham Institute and Library have been lobbying for the library to be reopened in the Institute building which was its home for more than a century before it was closed under Lancashire County Council budget cuts in September 2016.

But the county council’s cabinet has decided the location is to be the Assembly Rooms in Dicconson Terrace.

County Coun Aidy Riggott, lead member for cultural services, said: “This decision took account of the installation cost, ongoing premises cost and liability, the needs of the community and the service requirements to run a sustainable and efficient library.”

Christine Marshall, chairman of the Friends, said: “It’s a sad day for the Institute and a sad day for democracy. We would urge people to continue to email those in charge at LCC expressing their dismay.”

A date is yet to be announced for the opening of the library in its new home.
