Bin bags full of clothes and other essentials have been donated, while money is also being raised to replace some of what was lost in yesterday's blaze in Rusland Avenue - which also killed their pet dog.

Family friend Hannah Threlfall said the donations will help the family’s seven children, who range in age from three to 13.

"It was when I was leaving the mum last night, her words were, 'This is where reality will kick in'.

"She was stood outside her house and she had nothing. It’s just a shame."

Hannah, who is accepting donations at her home in Troutbeck Crescent, said the family, who were at school and work when the fire started, have been told they have a lucky escape.
