POLICE patrols are to be stepped up after a worrying increase in crime in St Annes.
Incidents in the town’s Central Ward in August were up 32 per cent on the same time last year – to more than 50 incidents – while there was a month-on-month rise of 24 per cent on July.
Wood Street and St Albans Road have been highlighted as particular problem areas and officers are to extend their presence there, while traders and residents have been asked to be vigilant amid fears of an escalation in drug-related incidents.
In response, officers are looking to repeat the success of Operation Alleyway, which proved effective some years ago in driving down crime figures in the same parts of town.
