The emergency services – as well as volunteers from Blackpool RNLI – were scrambled shortly after 1am.

The 33-year-old was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital after being found on the beach close to Starr Gate, a spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said. She was unable to say whether he is local.

An RNLI spokeswoman said crews were paged at 1.30am. They scoured the Promenade and beach in a Land Rover before being stood down.

“The man has gone into the water but came back out,” she added. “There was us, Lytham Coastguard, police and the ambulance service.”

Lytham Coastguard tweeted: “Callout 93/16 search beach with @BlackpoolPolice for despondent male, assisted by @RNLIBlackpool.

“Spotted and detained by police on Prom.”
