He was fined £45 with £85 costs and ordered to pay £30 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates who ordered the destruction of the drugs.

Prosecutor, Martine Connah, said officers were dealing with a crime scene on May 15, at 3am, when they saw Masterson in Park Road on a bicycle.

He was found with a thumbnail-sized amount of cannabis.

Gerry Coyle, defending, said Masterson was out cycling when he saw a police patrol put the lights and sirens on their vehicle and he decided to follow them.

Mr Coyle added: “He sat on his bike smoking a joint and the officers smelled it. He is a fool unto himself.”
