Man left with serious injuries in street attack in '˜critical' condition

Detectives have launched a major investigation after a man was left fighting for his life after an attack in the street during the early hours of yesterday morning.

A 37-year-old man was last night said to be in a critical condition after suffering severe head injuries.

Police were called to Wood Street, St Annes, near the junction with Orchard Street at 1am.

They were responding to reports of an assault. When they arrived the victim was found unconscious on the pavement.

He had suffered “significant” head injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where last night he remained in a critical condition.

A 20 year old man from St Annes was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding and is currently in custody.

Detectives are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area at the time of the incident to come forward.

DCI Richard McCutcheon, from the Force Major Investigation Team said: “This incident has left one man fighting for his life and our enquiries remain on-going to establish what happened.

“The incident occurred in a busy area and we are keen to hear from anyone who has any information that could assist with our investigation.

“If you were in the vicinity at the time and saw what happened I would urge you to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
