A man was under the influence of drink and drugs when a shocked pensioner spotted him burgling his garage.

The stunned householder saw Thomas Barrett come out of the garage with a £50 pair of boots before scaling a back garden wall into an alley.

Barrett was found by police in a confused state in the alley, wearing the boots.

Barrett, a 31-year-old refuse collector, of St Albans Road, St Annes, pleaded guilty to burglary. He also admitted breaching two conditional discharges.

Barrett was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison suspended for two years and put on two years supervision by Blackpool magistrates.

Steven Townley, defending, said: “He had consumed alcohol and Valium, did not know what he was doing and behaved in a bizarre fashion.”
