At the time of the offences she was on a suspended prison sentence for several shoplifting crimes.

Presiding magistrate, Mark Cottriall, told her: “The court and probation service have tried to help you and the report we got back was very disappointing.”

Jim Mowbray, prosecuting, said Fitton stole chocolate bars and boxes valued at £53 from the Co-op in Coronation Street on June 12.

On June 24 she took men’s fragrance valued at £26 from Boots, Bank Hey Street.

Gary McAnulty, defending, said Fitton had gone off the rails after her father died suddenly and she split up with her partner for a time.

Fitton had had problems with drugs but was now on a methadone prescription. She was a vulnerable person who had not been to prison before.
