Robert Kay, 49, claimed to be the son of Satan as he attacked the father of three in his garage in York Road, St Annes.

Kay, a long term drug user who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, claimed he was suffering a psychotic episode when he killed Mr Dollery, 51.

He did not know his victim and the attack was completely unprovoked.

Kay, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Preston Crown Court.

After a day and a half deliberating the jury found Kay’s psychotic state was drug induced - and he had voluntarily taken amphetamines triggering the psychosis on the day he killed Mr Dollery.

Members of Mr Dollery’s family hugged each other as the verdict was delivered.

Kay, who has been held in Ashworth Hospital since his arrest, has been jailed for life.
