According to rescue teams, the girl was eventually found safe and well "paddling close to the water's edge" not far North Pier around an hour later.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: "We were called by the police to help search for a young girl who was last seen by her grandparents in the water.

"She was found safe and well at around 7.15pm by the police not far from where she was last seen and it seems that she had just wandered off.

"Remember to always keep an eye of your children when playing near or in the water."

Nobody was injured during the incident.
