Councillors were delighted at the response to a survey inviting property owners who had been affected by flooding in the past to tell of their experiences.

The closing date was extended to earlier this month to encourage as much feedback as possible and more than 300 contributions were received.

Next step is for the findings to initially be considered at a meeting on Friday, March 19 of a flooding working group specially set up by Fylde Council’s environment, health and housing committee to review flood risk and surface water management.

Coun Tommy Threlfall, chairman of the environment, health and housing committee, said: “I’m really pleased to see so many responses to the flooding survey.

“This is more power to our elbow as we tackle the flooding authorities about the work we need to see carried out in Fylde to protect homes and businesses.

“It means we can put the realities of people’s experiences and concerns before Lancashire County Council, the Environment Agency and United Utilities to ensure they recognise the magnitude of the problems our residents face, and also the strength of feeling on the issue.”

Fylde MP Mark Menzies, who has long campaigned for the best united efforts to keep flood waters at bay, stressed the importance of the survey feedback as he urged as many Fylde residents who had been affected by flooding as possible to have their say.

He said: “The more evidence we have, the more we can present as we make the case for funding bids.

“I will be working with the committee at Fylde and taking the findings to ministers.

“We have issues in Fylde which are the responsibility of several different flood authorities.

“It is not always obvious whose responsibility certain issues are and we are seeing a lack of understanding between these authorities on too many occasions.”

The decision to set up the working group was taken after significant flooding events at various locations, including Kirkham, Wrea Green and Freckleton, last summer.

Park View 4U playing fields at Lytham were also badly hit in 2019, while much Fylde land was left saturated by heavy rains earlier this year.
