Film star roles for Blackpool aviation museum creations

One of the aviation museum's Messersmitt 109 cockpits being flimed

The Lytham St Annes Spitfire Ground Display Team has been busy building realistic props for filmmakers.

And Hollywood superstar Mel Gibson’s son Milo, who starred in Hacksaw Ridge, could be set to sit in one of the cockpits they have hand built in a new movie in production called Hurricane after the famous RAF fighter plane.

It tells the story of Canadian fighter ace Lt Johnny Kent who led the Polish 303 squadron in the Battle of Britain.

The team based at the aviation museum at Blackpool Airport used their skills to create a series of cockpits for filming including a Hurricane, a French Morane and one of the Hurricane's aerial opponents, a German Messerschmitt 109.

John Coombes, from the group, said: “The Spitfire Team has gained years of experience working with full size replica aircraft and further developing them for display purposes. During 2017 we have developed a team of professional model builders whom have not only helped with the exhibits at Hangar 42 Blackpool Airport but have also been asked to assist with film and TV productions.

“We are also currently working on another BBC production ‘Grandpa’s Great Escape’ which will air on Christmas Day this year, with a Spitfire playing a leading role.

“The Hangar 42 project is about creating an authentic Second World War venue for people to visit throughout the year. This new strand of the business will aim to widen our commercial arm with a view to attracting funding.”
