Fire crews rescue man from fifth floor flat

The casualty, in his thirties, had to be helped from the top floor of a five-storey block on Trafalgar Road, South Shore.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene and then taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. His condition is not thought to be serious.

Another man, who is the manager of the building, was also checked over by ambulance staff as a precaution, but he did not require hospital treatment.

Crews from Blackpool and South Shore were called to the blaze at shortly before 6am.

Watch manager Warren Topp said: “It was reported that someone was in the flat, which was on the top floor of a five-storey building.

“A man in his thirties was rescued from the flat and taken to hospital. It appears he had inhaled quite a bit of smoke.

“The manager of the building discovered the fire after the alarm went off. He went to investigate and attempted to put the fire out using extinguishers before we arrived.

“He didn’t realise there was someone in the flat because of the density of the smoke.

“Firefighters using breathing apparatus managed to get the man out and extinguished the fire.

“The cause is still under investigation, but it is not thought to be suspicious. A number of electrical items are being examined.”
