A Blackpool animal charity is holding a free microchipping event for pet dogs and cats.

The event will take place from 11am to 3pm at Longview Animal Centre’s Highfield Road charity shop in South Shore on December 14.

Pet owners are encouraged to take advantage of the free procedure, which normally costs £25 or more at vet surgeries.

The microchips, which contain a unique code which helps owners locate their pets if they are lost or stolen, are inserted painlessly under the animal’s skin and can be updated by owners at any time.

As of April 2016, it will be a legal requirement for pet owners tohave their dogs microchipped in England and Wales.
