A Blackpool computer games buff is aiming to take up his broadsword and go into battle for a world record in one of the biggest online games.

Garron Holliday who has his own YouTube channel for video games is aiming to break the record for the longest continuous time spent playing World of Warcraft.

Garron, 26, is hoping to break the existing record held by a Japanese woman of 29 hours and at the same time raise some much-needed money for Brian House children’s hospice.

He has received his official application from the Guinness World Record team and is now putting together his bid.

He said: “It is quite involved I have to have stewards and witnesses and follow the strict guidelines.

“I am a YouTuber under the name GazHD123 and have been into computer gaming since I was six so this is something I have always wanted to do.

“I hold a YouTube Let’s Play record for playing Grand Theft Auto 5 for 22 hours without sleep.

“It was a live streaming online event so I had lots of other gamers asking me questions and talking to me, which helped keep me awake and I had plenty of energy drinks!

“It is quite a long time since I played World Of Warcraft so I am hoping that will help prevent me getting bored half way through, but I am really looking forward to it.

“It will be all new to me but there are millions of people who play it regularly, it is one of the biggest ever online games.”

World of Warcraft is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game launched in 2004 which needs a subscription to play.

People create a character and explore the landscape, fight various monsters, complete quests and interact with other players.

It is set in a fantasy world called Azeroth inhabited by a variety of characters such as humans, elves, orcs, dwarves and monsters.

Creators Blizzard Entertainment, based in the US, say that it has been played by more than 100 million gamers over its lifetime and at its peak had 670,000 player versus player encounters trades or battles.

Garron said: “I am thinking of creating a night-elf hunter character or a rogue.

“The elves are the only characters which use bows which appeals to me, but then rogues or thieves can turn invisible for a short period to sneak up on enemies.

“It is going to be a real challenge but my mates think I am capable and it is for a good cause.”

World of Warcraft Facts

It was released in November 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment after four years of development.

At its peak in October 2010 there were more than 12 million subscribers worldwide.

In 2005 and 2006, it was the 
best-selling computer game in the world. There have been six expansion games added on to the original, the latest was entitled Legion and released in August 2016.

It holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscribers.
