Gig tribute to Chris

Friends gathered at the gig hosted by local rock band Rupert Fabulous at The Waterloo pub to pay tribute to Chris ‘Higgy’ Higson, who recently died from cancer.

Band member Gary Cunliffe said: “Chris had watched the band for years which is how we got to know him.

“He used to enjoy a pint or two in the Dunes or the Farmers in South Shore where he was well known and a popular character.”

The gig raised £470 for the local Macmillan nursing team, thanks to Vicky Henderson’s hamper auctioned at £130 as well as donations on the door.

Chris’s brother, Eric Higson, said: “The family can’t thank Macmillan enough for all their help during Chris’s last few weeks.”

Gary explained Chris was a keen fund-raiser himself.

He said: “He was involved in many fund-raising events himself through the bike club he was in.

“One of the events was the Toy Run for Trinity Hospice and Brian House.”

He added: “The gig wasn’t a sombre event but more of a rowdy, loud, rocking celebration of his life.

“The place was packed to the doors and the atmosphere was electric.

“Most of his friends turned up and his brother Eric made an emotional speech.

“It was an amazing tribute to Chris and I imagine exactly what he would have wanted.”
