Hail the heroic little pickers!

The group, popularly known as FLAG, unites the activities of Fylde Council, litter volunteer groups, 80 local businesses and schools and a further 250 individual volunteers.

Since its formation in January, approximately 11,650 sacks have been filled with litter and 150 litter-picks completed.

Group members have now been shortlisted in the ‘partnership’ section for Keep Britain Tidy’s annual awards in February.

Coun David Eaves, chairman of Fylde Council’s Operational Management Committee, said: “FLAG started after a number of civic-minded individuals and companies got in touch with the town hall and offered to help.

“Many were already doing good work but their initial inquiry acted as a catalyst for what has become a very large project.

“Their efforts mean that Fylde is spick and span – something that is important for residents and visitors.

“Council staff can’t be everywhere, but they ca, and should, be open to new ways of working which is what FLAG represents.

“This has developed into a superb project that sees between 50 and 100 litter-pickers out at least once a week.

“Posters are displayed across Fylde and major firms, such as Marks and Spencer, Danbro, Stringers, Booths, AXA and McDonald’s are making staff available to help out.

“I don’t know of any larger or more innovative litter-busting group anywhere in the nation and all Fylde people will be wishing the group well in February’s awards.”

The Keep Britain Tidy awards will be announced and presented at the organisation’s annual network conference, being held in Birmingham.
