Health bosses seek hair lice treatments

'˜Nitty Nora the nit nurse' may be a role of the past but now health chiefs want to know if parents today still understand the possible treatments available.

NHS Blackpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is asking local people what they know about the different ways to treat head lice, which they would choose and where they would go to get further advice.

Dr Amanda Doyle, a Blackpool GP and chief clinical officer at NHS Blackpool CCG said: “The NHS in Blackpool spends thousands of pounds prescribing head lice treatments. However, most of these treatments are available at low cost over the counter in local pharmacies or simple things which people can undertake by themselves at home.

“The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends the most effective way to treat head lice is by wet-combing. Therefore, in line with this guidance we are reviewing the treatments which we currently routinely prescribe.

“As part of this, we want to understand the needs of local people with regards to head lice. This includes hearing their views on how they would usually treat it and what things they think might prevent them from being able to.”

The CCG is encouraging anyone with experience of head lice to complete a short survey.
