High praise for speed bid

Youngsters from Lytham St Annes Technology and Performing Arts College have spent months calling on county hall highways chiefs to cut the speed limit outside their school to 20mph.

They are still anxiously waiting to see if their campaign will pay dividends, but have already impressed Parliament with their dedication.

The school council has been honoured by The Speaker’s School Council Awards scheme, and Fylde MP Mark Menzies, who presented the commendation, has pledged to keep supporting their campaign. He said: “It makes me extremely proud young people from Fylde are being recognised in Westminster for their hard work.

“The campaign has been extremely positive and councillors are listening to these young people who’ve made their voices heard.”

The Worsley Road school was runner up in the 11-16 category, which received almost 300 entries nationally.

Judges on the panel - who included The Speaker of the House of Commons – said they were “incredibly impressed” by the students’ work.

Greg Anderton, chairman of the school council, said: “It’s been a very good opportunity for us to show other people what we are doing.

“We have not been willing to have our ideas about road safety overlooked by councillors.”

The school want the speed limit on Worsley Road and Albany Road lowered as part of Lancashire County Council’s programme to introduce 20mph limits across the county.

Headteacher Phil Wood said: “The members of the school council have impressed everyone with the responsible and enthusiastic way they formulated their concerns, mounting a very impressive campaign for safety measures to be implemented around the school.

“We are very proud of their achievements in winning this award.”
